Peggy Kastner Bio

I attended my first race in Thompson, CT when I was still in college.  My sister, a friend of hers and I sat on the hillside watching the races and I wanted to be down in the paddock where the racers were!  After I moved to California, my neighbor up above me was a "wannabe" racer.  Through him, I met some other future racers.  I dated one and went to drivers school with him (Kas was probably chief instructor but who knew?).  Then I started dating another racer who needed a pass for the mechanic's girlfriend, so I started writing for CALIFORNIA SPORTS CAR, which was sold on newsstands (1960's).  Later I wrote for the Formula Racing Association magazine and then for Cal Club's paper.  Then I was talked into working at the info center at Cal Club races, and then Registration and Pre-Grid.  Since I was pretty outspoken, I was talked into running for the Board of Governors.  That was around 1979 or 80.  Oh, yeah I forgot.  While I was writing for the Cal Club paper, John Brophy, the publisher, introduced me to Kas!  I then went on to work for him (and other teams) doing timing  & scoring.  That was a lot of fun and continued from 1971 or '72 through '77 or '78.  My sister was working for Parnelli Jones' team so we traveled together to races all over the country (red-eye on Thurs. night and red-eye back on Sun. so we could go to work on Monday).  Once I became involved in the political side of the club, I pretty much stopped my running around the countryside.  I was on the BoG for about 16 years total I guess.  I was Regional Executive (President) four times and Vice RE at least as many times.  I was also Treasurer and Divisional Scheduler.  I was President when Cal Club decided it was finally time to build our own race track or run out of places to race.  I'd like to feel I was instrumental in getting the initial dollars raised to buy the property and get through the environmental steps to bring Buttonwillow to fruition.  I was still on the Board and Chief Registrar until 1999.  I had moved in with Kas and it was getting to be too much to travel every other weekend so I finally retired.  I have now passed 35 years membership in SCCA and have transferred my passion to the game of golf.
